This Is Not a Jenny Craig Endorsement

Posted by Steph

No, this is not a Jenny Craig endorsement. This is proof that if you put in the work
(put on your shoes and watch what you eat)
you will see results!

Ten Reasons Why I Continue To Put ON My Shoes

Posted by Steph
  1.   I’ve gone this far so why not continue?
  2.   The clock keeps ticking, therefore the half marathon and Ragnar are getting closer.
  3.   Love the muscle definition in my legs and realize it is from A LOT of HARD WORK.
  4.   My butt looks good in my jeans. (Oh wait, I’m a Shumway, therefore I have no butt.)
  5.   Love the smell of Ammonia.
  6.   Have a little less guilt when I eat something I shouldn’t (within reason – a piece of cake, not the WHOLE  cake).
  7.  Love setting new PRs.
  8.   Feel a bond with my family and friends.
  9.   Keeps me out of the “winter blues”.
  10.   I hate putting them on, but LOVE the feeling of accomplishment when I am taking them off!

Go put on your shoes today!!!!

Lost Toe-Nail. Reward?

posted by Stacy

It's gone.  Just like a loose tooth, it wiggled and fell off!  I am planning on sticking it under my pillow to see if there's a toe-nail fairy and just how much a toe-nail is worth these days.  Fingers crossed.  Toes missing nails.

Just Say NO To Samples

Posted by Steph

Today I had to run to the grocery store because we mysteriously run out of milk. I’m starting to think that the cereal fairy comes at night and pours our milk down the sink. On second thought, it may be Camden. That boy consumes more cereal than anyone I know (except for maybe Connor).

Anyway, I ran in the store to grab a few things and today happened to be SAMPLE day. You would have thought I was at Costco, but no, this was our little grocery store up the road.

As I approached the first sample lady she asked if I wanted a sample of some turkey sausage. I politely declined and continued on my way. The second sample lady came out from behind her cooking station and accosted me trying to get me to sample whatever was on her menu. I again declined, politely, and she literally scoffed at me like “who doesn’t want a free sample?” I immediately turned down the first isle that I came to, to get away from her. As I continued getting the items on my list, I realized I forgot one thing, which happened to be on the other side of the store by the two sample ladies. I almost went home without it, but I figured I would venture back over that way so I didn’t have to make an additional trip back.

I walked by the second lady first and made certain I DID NOT make any eye contact, but it just so happened that the first sample lady was right in front of what I was looking for. Again, she asked me if I would like a sample of some turkey sausage. Again I said no, and then… she asked me why. (They must have been slow that day, or maybe they get paid by the amount of sausage they give out, I’m not sure, but I’ve never been asked that before.) I simply told her that I watch what I eat very carefully. Her reply was this turkey sausage was weight watchers approved! I again told her no thank you and she LAUGHED AT ME!! Now forgive me for what I’m about to say, but this lady could stand to lose a few pounds herself (or maybe a job change, because it looked like she had sampled a few too many of her own items), so I told her that I had recently lost 30 pounds and it was due to the fact I counted EVERY calorie that I put in my mouth. She immediately stopped laughing and said: “Dang girl, you look good!”

So, just say NO to samples!

Sockless in Syracuse

Posted by Steph

I got off work today just in time to hussle to the gym before I had my first Ragnar meeting (will do a post on that in the future).  Got out my bag to change and realized I had NO SOCKS!!!  What did I do, you ask?  I put on my shoes without socks, and ran 4.5 miles.  I think I have a blister on the top of my foot...  (btw DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT smell my shoes.)   :)  Moral of the story is pack several pairs of socks, just in case!!!

It's easy to get in shape but hard to stay in shape!

Posted by Mark
January marked my one year anniversary of being a consistent exerciser.  Last year, just after Christmas, I decided to get my rear-end off the couch and do a vigorous workout 3 - 5 days per week pretty much every week for the entire year.  It was hard at first but the results were inspiring..  To go from 190+ lbs. to 160 or less lbs. was awesome.  I quickly gained more agility, have tons more energy and generally feel great all of the time.  What a reward for the effort.

I also set a goal to participate in a Triathlon and not only finished it, but finished it well.  That too, was very rewarding.  Probably the best part though was the constant accolade I got from friends, family and acquaintances.  Every time I'd see someone I hadn't seen for awhile they would inevitably comment on how skinny I look.  It's very exciting to see the changes occur in your body but its compounded when it is affirmed by someone else.  I occasionally would pull on my 36" jeans and joke that two of me can now fit in them now then gleefully watch them fall uninhibited to the floor when I let go.  These were the sorts of thing that really kept me motivated over the past year.  It seemed something new and exciting would happen almost daily.

Enter my one year anniversary.  The proverbial honeymoon is over.  Nobody cares how skinny I am anymore.  Everyone is used to seeing me the way I am.  Having more agility and energy is now normal for me.  I tend to forget what it felt like to be lethargic.  My fat jeans are all tucked away in a remote corner of the closet and forgotten.  When I stand on the scale its pretty much the same. Its not exciting anymore.

This begs the question of how does one stay motivated when its not fun anymore?  The answer,  who knows. I just put on my shoes and go run because that's what I've done for a year.  I guess its a matter of commitment, habit and dogged determination.  Will I keep doing it?  Yup.  Do I like it? Nope.  Is it worth the effort?  I think it is.  Committing to a competition every year will help too.

This Little Piggy Went Jogging

Posted by Stacy

This little piggy went jogging, that little piggy did too.  The next little piggy wanted new sox, it's friend to the right did too...and because I kept jogging anyway it decided to turn black and blue!

UPDATE:  I took this photo a little too soon.  today, this little piggy looks like someone colored it in with a black permanent marker.  And now a second one is turning colors too.  Lovely.  Anyone have dark nail polish I can borrow??
